What AI developer tools cover

AI developer tools help people write, run and ship software faster. For professional developers, that usually means an AI coding assistant in the editor and APIs that add AI features to a product. For founders and small businesses without a developer, it increasingly means AI app builders that turn a plain-English prompt into a working web or mobile app.

The tools on this hub fall into four groups: AI coding and app building, APIs and platforms for building AI into products, developer components and databases, and utilities that make a developer's machine more useful. The right choice depends on whether you write code yourself and what you are building.

AI coding tools and AI app builders

AI coding assistant and agent tools such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor and Claude Code

An AI coding assistant sits in your editor or IDE, suggests code as you type, explains unfamiliar parts of a codebase and, in agent mode, carries out multi-step tasks such as writing a feature, fixing a bug or adding a test. Well-known options include GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code, Tabnine, JetBrains AI Assistant and Amazon Q Developer. Some run as a plugin in an existing IDE, such as VS Code or a JetBrains editor, while others are a full AI-first editor or a command-line agent. We have not reviewed these coding assistants yet, but our comparison of Emergent and Cursor shows how an AI editor differs from a prompt-to-app builder.

No-code AI app builders like Replit, Bolt and Emergent

AI app builders write the whole project for you: frontend, backend, database and hosting. They suit founders who want a prototype, an internal tool or a first product without hiring a developer.

  • Emergent builds frontend, backend and database from a prompt and publishes to the web, Play Store and App Store. You own the code and can sync it to GitHub. See also Emergent and Replit compared.
  • Atoms, formerly MetaGPT X, uses a team of AI agents for research, coding, SEO and Google Ads, with a built-in backend for login, database and hosting. Race Mode runs a prompt across several models so you can pick the best version.
  • OnSpace AI builds native iOS and Android apps as well as web apps, with Supabase and Stripe built in and code export through GitHub.
  • YouWare is an AI agent workspace for decks, reports and simple websites, aimed at non-coders rather than production apps.

AI APIs and developer platform options

If you are a developer adding AI to your own product, a platform with a good API often matters more than an editor plugin.

  • Vapi is a developer platform for phone and web voice agents. You choose your own transcriber, model and voice, and testing and call simulation are included on every plan.
  • Segmind puts 550+ image, video and audio models behind one API key, with PixelFlow to chain models into reusable workflows.
  • Apify is a web scraping and automation platform with a large store of ready-made Actors, an API, CLI, scheduling and an MCP server for AI agents.

Components, databases and utilities for development

Magic UI is a free, MIT-licensed library of 150+ animated React components built to work with shadcn/ui, Tailwind CSS and Motion. Teable is an Airtable-style AI database with an app builder that can be self-hosted. Parallels Desktop runs Windows, Linux and macOS virtual machines on a Mac, which suits developers who need to build or test for more than one operating system.

How to choose AI coding tools for your team

  • Who writes the code. Developers need an assistant that fits their IDE and development workflow. Non-coders need an app builder that handles hosting, database and deployment.
  • Context and codebase size. The best results come from tools that understand your whole project, not one file. Check how much context each tool can read from a large codebase.
  • Model choice. Models change quickly. Tools that let you pick or switch the AI model age better than those locked to one.
  • Code ownership. Check you can export the code or sync it to GitHub, so you are not locked in. Emergent, Atoms and OnSpace AI all allow this.
  • Data and training. Find out whether your code or prompts train the vendor's models. On some app builders, opting out needs a top plan.
  • Integration and support. Look for support for your stack, version control, payments and the APIs your project already uses, and check what level of customer support each plan includes.

How AI fits into a development workflow

The biggest gains come when AI handles the repetitive parts of development and people keep the decisions. In a typical code workflow, an assistant drafts boilerplate code, writes a first version of a feature, suggests tests and explains code you did not write. A coding agent can then take a ticket, change several files and open a pull request for review. Developers who give the agent clear context, such as the relevant files, coding standards and a short plan, get faster and more reliable results.

For teams, the questions are wider than code quality. Check that the tool works with your version control, CI pipeline and code review process, that admins can control which models and integrations are allowed, and that enterprise features such as single sign-on and audit logs exist if you need them. Roll out to a few developers first, measure whether features ship faster, then decide on wider use.

Context, IDE support and integration

The biggest difference between AI coding tools is how much context they understand. A tool that reads your whole repository, documentation and open files gives better code suggestions than one that only sees the current line. Check IDE support too: some tools work as extensions for VS Code and JetBrains editors, others are full editors or browser-based development environments. GitHub Copilot, for example, runs inside several popular editors. Look at integration with your Git host, issue tracker and CI pipeline, and at features for code review, testing and documentation, as these fit an existing development workflow better than a separate chat window. Teams should also check admin features, such as model choice, usage limits and whether code is used for training.

Is AI-generated code safe? Code review still matters

AI-built code can look finished and still hide security holes, weak authentication or poor data handling. Our reviews of Emergent and OnSpace AI both note that apps with real security or scale needs should have a proper code review before launch. Treat an AI coding agent like a fast junior developer on your team. It is useful, but every code change needs checking, testing and a human review before it reaches customers.

Pricing, free plans and lifetime deals for developer tools

Pricing in this category varies widely. App builders such as Emergent, Atoms and YouWare run on credits, and few publish how many credits a typical app uses, so costs are hard to predict. API platforms such as Vapi, Segmind and Apify charge by usage, which suits variable workloads but makes bills harder to forecast. Component libraries and utilities are simpler: Magic UI Pro is a one-off payment, while Parallels Desktop sells a one-time licence alongside annual plans.

Free plans are common. Apify includes monthly usage on its free plan, Atoms gives daily credits and Teable has a generous free tier. For lifetime deals, read how to evaluate a SaaS lifetime deal and lifetime deal vs subscription before buying, and follow the live deals with price alerts.

AI developer tools FAQ

What is the best AI for coding?

For developers who write code every day, an AI coding assistant in the editor, such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor or Claude Code, is the usual choice. For non-coders, an AI app builder such as Emergent or Atoms writes the whole app from a prompt. The right tool depends on your skills, your stack and how much control you need.

Are there free AI developer tools?

Yes. Magic UI has a free MIT-licensed component library, Apify's free plan includes monthly usage with no card needed, Teable has a generous free plan, Emergent has a free plan and Atoms gives free daily credits. Free tiers on app builders usually make projects public or add a badge, so check the limits before you build.

Which AI model is best for coding?

There is no permanent answer, because new models arrive every few months and each has strengths. That is why tools that let you choose or switch models are useful. Atoms, for example, has a Race Mode that runs one prompt across several models so you can compare the results and keep the best version.

Are there AI developer tools on GitHub?

Yes. Magic UI is an open-source library with recent commits on GitHub, and Atoms is built on the MIT-licensed MetaGPT framework. Several app builders, including Emergent, Atoms and OnSpace AI, also let you export or sync the code they write to GitHub, so you can keep working on it in your own editor.

Can AI build an app without coding?

Yes, AI app builders such as Emergent, Atoms and OnSpace AI can build a working web or mobile app with login, a database and payments from a plain-English prompt. They are well suited to prototypes and internal tools. For apps with real users, sensitive data or scale needs, have a developer review the code and security before launch.
