Jenni AI and Paperpal are both AI writing assistants for academic work, but they help at different stages. Jenni is mainly a drafting tool: it suggests the next sentence as you write, lets you chat with your PDFs and inserts citations. Paperpal is mainly an editing and checking tool: it improves academic English, checks grammar, plagiarism and references, and tells you how well a paper fits a journal. I compared both from their pricing pages on 27 October 2026. Paperpal showed prices in pounds for my UK visit.

A note on academic integrity

Both tools can produce or rewrite text. Before using either for coursework or a thesis, check your institution’s rules on AI assistance, and keep your drafts. Using AI to polish your own writing is widely accepted; submitting AI-generated text as your own may not be. Paperpal includes an AI detection check, which is useful for seeing how your work might be read by a reviewer.

Jenni AI writing assistant overview

Jenni’s plans are built around AI Autocomplete (it suggests text as you type), AI Edits, AI Chat, Reviews and Workflow runs, plus PDF uploads so the AI can work from your sources. Every plan includes unlimited citations in 10,000+ citation styles and editor content export; paid plans add full document export. Plus adds live chat support and Pro adds priority support.

The workflow suits the blank-page problem: you upload your papers, outline your argument and let Jenni help you draft, citing your sources as you go. You still need to check every suggestion, as AI autocomplete can sound confident while being wrong.

Paperpal overview

Paperpal says it is trusted by more than 5 million researchers and students. Its features are grouped into checks (grammar and consistency, plagiarism, AI detection, journal fit and reference checks), agents, writing and polishing tools (paraphrase, trim, translate, AI review), a research and library area (research Q&A, citation lookup, chat with papers and library storage) and Illustrate, a beta tool for AI-assisted figure generation. It works inside Microsoft Word through an add-in and in Google Docs and Overleaf through Chrome and Edge extensions.

Customer quotes on its site come mostly from academics and non-native English speakers who use it to make manuscripts read more professionally.

Key feature comparison for research papers

Drafting and writing

Jenni is the stronger drafting assistant. Autocomplete, AI chat over your PDFs and workflow runs are designed to help you produce the first draft. Paperpal has writing tools too, but they focus on reworking text you have written: paraphrase, trim, translate and AI review.

Editing, grammar and checks

Paperpal is the stronger editing tool. Its grammar checks are built for academic English, and it adds plagiarism checks (10,000 words a month on Prime, 30,000 on Pro), AI detection, reference checks and journal fit reports. Jenni’s Reviews give feedback on your draft, but its pricing page does not list plagiarism or reference checks.

Research, references and citations

Both help with sources. Jenni lets you upload PDFs and cite them in thousands of styles. Paperpal adds research Q&A, citation lookup and a library with storage up to 10GB on Pro.

A typical research paper workflow with each

To compare them in practice, think about a literature review or journal paper. With Jenni, you would upload the key papers as PDFs, ask the AI chat to summarise what each one says about your research question, then draft your sections with autocomplete and insert citations from your uploaded sources. Jenni’s Reviews then give feedback on the draft.

With Paperpal, you would usually write the paper in Word, Google Docs or Overleaf and use the add-in or extension as you go. Before submitting, you would run the grammar and consistency check, the plagiarism check, the reference check and the journal fit report, and use chat with papers or research Q&A when you need to check a point in the literature.

The two fit together quite naturally, which is why some researchers may end up paying for both. If you can only afford one, decide whether your bottleneck is writing the paper or getting it ready for review.

Pricing compared

Plan Jenni AI Paperpal (UK prices)
Free 10 autocompletes a day, 10 PDF uploads, 3 AI edits, 5 chat messages 200 grammar edits a month, lite reports, 5 uses a day of writing and research tools
Mid Plus: $30 monthly or $12 a month yearly Prime: £109 a year, shown at £76.3 during a sale
Top Pro: $73 monthly or $29 a month yearly Pro: £264 a year, shown at £184.8 during a sale

Jenni’s yearly billing saves 60%. Paperpal says yearly saves 67% against monthly, and it also offers 2 and 3 year Prime plans paid once. Paperpal lists a 100% money-back guarantee and the option to pause your subscription.

Limits and drawbacks

  • Jenni’s monthly prices are much higher than its yearly ones, so it is expensive for a single term.
  • Jenni works in its own editor rather than in Word or Google Docs.
  • Paperpal’s drafting help is lighter than Jenni’s.
  • Paperpal’s pricing page was showing sale prices, so the normal yearly price is higher.

Verdict, which academic writing tool should you choose?

I would pick Jenni AI if the hard part for you is drafting: turning sources and notes into paragraphs with citations. Its free plan is enough to see whether autocomplete suits the way you write.

I would pick Paperpal if you write your own drafts and need them to read well and pass checks before submission, especially if English is not your first language or you’re preparing a journal manuscript. Many researchers could reasonably use both: Jenni to draft and Paperpal to polish and check.

Alternatives

  • SciSpace: an AI research assistant for finding and understanding papers.
  • Grammarly: general grammar and clarity help across apps.
  • Zotero: a free reference manager to pair with either tool.
