Elai.io and Synthesia are two AI video platforms built mainly for business and training. Both let you type a script (or upload slides), choose an AI avatar presenter and a voice, and render a video without a camera or crew. Synthesia is the bigger name and has expanded into roleplays and surveys. Elai, which is now part of Panopto, stays focused on learning and development. I compared both using their own pricing pages and homepages on 27 October 2026. Synthesia showed prices in pounds for my UK visit, so I have kept them that way.

Elai.io AI video overview

Elai calls itself an AI video generator for learning and development. Its homepage lists 80+ AI avatars (or your own custom avatar), voice cloning in 28 languages, 75+ languages and 450+ accents, one-click video translation, an AI Storyboard that turns a script or course outline into a video, an article to video converter, PPTX to video, avatar dialogues with two avatars on a slide, interactive video and personalised video at scale.

Its pricing is minute-based: Creator is $29 a month for up to 15 minutes, Team is $125 a month for 50 minutes with 3 editors, 3 guests, custom images and fonts, 4K video and premium voices. Annual billing saves 20%, and one selfie avatar and one voice clone come with an annual Team subscription. Extra minutes cost $2 each, and Elai’s FAQ says minutes are used every time you render, even if it is the same video.

Synthesia overview

Synthesia describes itself as an AI video and avatar platform for business, used by over 2,000,000 people and, it says, 90% of the Fortune 100. Its features include stock and personal avatars (made from a single photo), an avatar builder for 3D, comic, anime or claymation styles, an AI Video Assistant that turns a prompt, link or file into a video, PPT to video, interactive videos with branching and quizzes, AI dubbing into 130+ languages with voice cloning and lip-sync, and an MCP. It also has Sessions for live roleplay practice and conversational surveys, and a new video model called Syren.

AI avatar, team and training feature comparison

For a training team, both cover the basics well: script to video, slides to video, translation and interactivity. Synthesia goes further on interactivity (branching scenarios, roleplays and surveys) and has the larger stock avatar library on higher plans. Elai’s avatar dialogues and article to video converter are useful touches, and its 4K output on the Team plan is a plus for screen-heavy content.

SCORM, LMS and the editing workflow

Most training teams start from existing material. Both tools can generate a first draft from an existing PowerPoint, and both let you edit scenes, scripts and avatars afterwards. Elai adds an article to video converter for blog posts and an AI Storyboard for building a course outline. Synthesia’s AI Video Assistant takes a prompt, link or file and turns it into an on-brand draft, then you refine it in the editor. When you compare the two, look at how quickly you can update a video when a policy or product changes, since that is where AI video saves the most time over filming.

On LMS delivery, a customer review quoted on Synthesia’s homepage mentions how easy it is to upload its videos into an LMS, and Elai’s pages focus on interactive learning. I didn’t find SCORM export listed on either pricing page I read, so check that with each vendor if your LMS needs it.

Pricing for each team size

Tier Elai.io Synthesia
Free No free plan listed; trial available Basic £0: 10 minutes of video or dubbing a month, 500 credits, watermark
Entry Creator $29/month: 15 minutes, 1 user, Full HD Starter £19/month (first month £9): 1,250 credits, about 12 minutes, downloads, no logo
Team Team $125/month: 50 minutes, 3 editors, 4K Pro £69/month (first month £38): 6,000 credits, about 60 minutes, 5 personal avatars
Enterprise Corporate plans with unlimited minutes Custom: unlimited video minutes, 1-click translations into 140+ languages

Synthesia now uses credits as a shared currency across video, dubbing and surveys, and its pricing page says yearly billing saves up to 5 months. Elai’s minutes are simpler to understand. Per minute of video, Synthesia Pro works out cheaper on the published figures, but the two currencies make direct comparison approximate.

Translation and localisation

Translation is one of the main reasons companies use AI video at all, because re-recording a presenter in ten languages is expensive. Elai says it supports 75+ languages and 450+ accents, offers one-click video translation and can clone your voice into 28 languages, so the same presenter can speak to each market. Synthesia says it supports 140+ languages for avatar videos and offers AI dubbing of existing videos into 130+ languages with voice cloning and lip-sync, with 1-click translations into 140+ languages listed on its Enterprise plan.

On paper Synthesia covers more languages, and its dubbing works on videos you already have, not only ones made in Synthesia. If you mainly need a handful of major languages, Elai’s range is likely to be enough. Either way, have a native speaker review each translated video before it goes live.

Brand, export and customer support

For business video, brand control often matters as much as the avatar. Elai’s Team plan adds custom images and fonts, and its higher plans add 4K export. Synthesia’s Starter plan removes the Synthesia logo and allows downloads, while Pro adds branded video pages and on-brand avatars that wear outfits and backgrounds matching your brand.

On support, Synthesia lists chat and email support on Starter and priority support on Pro. Elai’s pricing page does not set out support levels by plan, though it publishes customer case studies from companies using it for e-learning.

If you produce a lot of text-heavy training content, I would expect the bigger time cost to be reviewing scripts and checking translations rather than rendering, so build those review hours into your plan whichever tool you choose.

Ease of use for a first-time user

Both are designed for people with no video production experience. Synthesia’s AI Video Assistant (prompt, link or file to a finished draft) and Elai’s AI Storyboard do a similar job of getting a first version quickly. Synthesia has a free plan, so it is easier to try before talking to sales; Elai offers a free trial from its homepage.

Limits and drawbacks

  • Elai has no free plan on its pricing page, and re-rendering a video uses minutes again.
  • Elai’s Creator plan is limited to 1 user and 15 minutes.
  • Synthesia’s free videos carry a watermark, and downloads need Starter.
  • Synthesia’s credit system covers several products, so heavy dubbing or survey use leaves fewer video minutes.

Is Elai a good Synthesia alternative?

For a learning and development team that mainly converts slides, documents and scripts into avatar videos, Elai is a reasonable alternative with simpler pricing and 4K on its Team plan. I would pick Synthesia for larger organisations that want interactive training, roleplays, a big avatar library and translation at scale, or anyone who wants a free plan to start with.

Other Synthesia alternative tools, including HeyGen

  • HeyGen: avatar video with newer AI video generation features and a free plan.
  • Vidnoz AI: a cheaper avatar video tool with a daily free allowance.
  • InVideo: AI video generation for marketing and social content rather than avatars.
