Our verdict

Vapi suits developers and technical teams who want full control over phone and web voice agents, starting on pay as you go. Skip it if you want a no-code AI receptionist or flat, predictable pricing.

Best for: Developers building phone and web voice agents

What we like

  • Choose your own transcriber, model and voice, passed through at cost.
  • Testing and call simulation included on every plan.
  • Vapi telephony, SIP, WebSockets and WebRTC have no transport fee.
  • SOC 2, HIPAA and PCI compliance stated by the vendor.

Think twice if

  • True per-minute cost depends on the models you pick.
  • Big jump from the $29 Core package to the $999 Pro minimum.
  • HIPAA handling is a $2,000 a month add-on.

What Vapi AI is and which developers and teams it suits

Vapi is a developer platform for building voice AI agents: AI that answers and makes phone calls, or talks to users in a web or mobile app. You pick a speech-to-text transcriber, a language model and a voice, configure the conversation flow, telephony and integrations, and Vapi runs the real-time orchestration in between. Common uses on its site are customer support, lead qualification and appointment scheduling, where a voice agent handles each interaction end to end and hands over to a human when needed.

Vapi is built for developers and technical teams. You get an API, a dashboard and a lot of control over every part of the voice stack, but you also need to make choices and wire things together yourself. Vapi says more than 1M developers use it and quotes customers such as Ring and Kavak. If you are a small business owner who wants a ready-made AI receptionist with no setup, a more packaged product will be easier.

Key Vapi features and capabilities for voice agents

Bring your own models

The Vapi platform lets you choose providers for each layer: for example Deepgram for transcription, OpenAI models for the “intelligence” and ElevenLabs for the voice, with the full model catalogue available on every plan. Model costs are passed through at cost with no markup, according to the pricing page, so you can trade quality against price per minute.

Phone, telephony and integrations

Every plan includes at least one Vapi phone number, and Vapi’s own telephony and SIP, WebSockets and Daily WebRTC carry no transport fee. You can also connect Twilio, Vonage or Telnyx numbers as an integration, which are charged by those providers per minute. Higher plans include more numbers, and Premier offers dedicated SIP.

Testing, monitoring and guardrails

All Vapi plans include testing and simulation, so you can run simulated calls before they reach customers, plus critical issue monitoring and observability for effectiveness and compliance. Vapi lists built-in AI guardrails to reduce hallucinations during each call, and says its infrastructure scales to millions of calls with average latency under 500ms.

Security and compliance controls

Vapi states it is SOC 2, HIPAA and PCI compliant. Zero data retention (ZDR) comes with any paid success package, role-based access control starts on Pro, and SSO is on Premier. HIPAA-eligible data handling with a Business Associate Agreement is a $2,000 a month add-on. Enterprise customers can get a dedicated engineer embedded in their team.

Vapi pricing and support packages

Vapi pricing has two parts, which matters when you estimate the cost of a live voice service. First, usage: a Vapi hosting fee of $0.05 a minute, plus the pass-through cost of the transcriber, model, voice and any telephony provider. Second, an optional “success package” for support, limits and data retention. These were the published figures on 27 October 2026:

Package Price Concurrent calls Phone numbers Support
No package (pay as you go) $0 to start, $5 free credits 4 1 Discord community, email without SLA
Core $29 a month 10 5 Email, 2 business day SLA
Pro 10% of hosting fee, $999 a month minimum 30 10 Email and Slack, 1 business day SLA, 99% uptime SLA
Premier Custom Custom Custom Named team, 1 hour P0 SLA, 99.9% uptime SLA

Vapi’s own estimator puts 1,000 minutes a month with Deepgram, OpenAI and ElevenLabs at about $82 to $129 in total before any success package, which works out at roughly 8 to 13 cents a minute. Extra concurrency is $10 per line a month and extra organisations are $20 each a month. Raw data retention runs from 14 days without a package to 180 days on Pro.

Vapi limitations and drawbacks

  • The real cost per minute depends on the models you choose, so you need to model your own stack rather than rely on the $0.05 headline.
  • It is a builder’s platform. Non-developers will find the setup, workflow design and the many choices hard work.
  • Support on the free and Core tiers is limited (community or a 2 business day SLA), which is slow for a live phone line.
  • HIPAA compliance adds $2,000 a month, which puts healthcare use out of reach for small practices.
  • The jump from Core at $29 to Pro at a $999 minimum is steep for teams that outgrow 10 concurrent calls but only need a little more.

Vapi alternatives: Retell AI and other voice AI platforms

  • Retell AI is the closest rival, a voice agent platform for developers with a similar usage-based model.
  • Bland AI focuses on phone call agents for enterprises that want a more managed setup.
  • Synthflow offers a no-code voice agent builder for businesses without developers.

Verdict on Vapi AI

Vapi is a flexible, developer-first voice AI platform that gives your team control over every layer of the voice agent stack, with models passed through at cost and solid testing and monitoring built in. I would pick it if you have developers and want to own your voice agents, starting on pay as you go and moving to Core when you go live. If you want a no-code AI receptionist or predictable flat pricing, a more packaged tool is a better fit.
